Communist Sandboxes and Random Adventures
Most of the people I know never want to GM. There seems to be an informal sort of etiquette, about it, even where someone who is sort of "Due" to GM is coerced in to running a game by having no one else agree to run them. It's actually kind of depressing... So, in my player-free (because I am a sucker) days I often wonder whether there is a way that the traditional style of RPG (Pencils, Character Sheets, Dice, Rulebooks) to which I have become accustomed can be adapted to work without a GM. I came up with a couple of solutions, which were:
Randomly determining the plotline on the fly.
This worked OK if the game met 2 of these 4 criteria- it was simple with it's types of encounters, had less than 4 players, was at low level, or used primarily shambling undead. It made a magnificent Savage Worlds zombie game, but the preparation process definitely requires an imagination, and probably requires an advanced course in statistics.
The text of this is going to be made available once I figure out how to generate the map effectively as the game goes along. The Zombie game is 6 pages of typewritten tables detailing the- Contents of each possible area, The likelihood of finding a set of resources, likelihood of behaviors for each monster type and for randomly generating NPC's and their behaviors, the rules for randomly generating buildings and their degree of repair, randomly determining dead-ends, and a system for tracking the in-game time using the adventure, and modifiers to each table based on the player's actions.
* Pros: Requires absolutely no GM, quick and easy to play, TOTALLY REUSABLE
* Cons: Limited Circumstances where the system is practical, Entirely too complicated to set up, Outliers occur and break the action, Final product is disproportionately small compared to work involved
* Points: Almost all Roll-Playing, for good or ill. Also, probably will drive those who attempt to create it insane.
Giving each participant 2 roles, and alternate the secondary role across each participant.
The primary role, for all participants, is still the player character, but the secondary roles are Adjudicator, Storyteller, and GMPC. When the participant is acting as the adjudicator, he is responsible for determining the difficulty of an action when it is provided by the storyteller, and for concealing that difficulty from the Storyteller and Players. The Storyteller is responsible for coming up with the action of the story.
When the participant is the storyteller, he also controls all NPC actions and temporarily relinquishes control of his Player character to another participant. The Player who's secondary role is the GMPC is responsible for playing the storyteller's character when he is moving the action of the story along and controlling the NPC's. These roles are rotated several times during the game when the Storyteller dictates thus.
* Pros: I don't know. I haven't tried it yet, but it is a cool hypothesis. I think the "pro" here is that it requires no real alteration of the pre-existing game system, but rather compartmentalizes the role of the GM.
* Cons: None forseen by me.
* Points: The Participants would have to agree on a general story concept before beginning the game.
Certainly would require experienced, comfortable, and cooperative players. People who like each other and want to role-play will probably find this fun. Kind of an homage to Lord Byron's party game, who's name I cannot remember, but supposedly was the game in which Mary Wollstonecraft came up with the beginning of Frankenstein. If anyone can remember what it is called, it would save me a trip to see the world's worst poetry professor... Please?
Khan Vs Barrera – Has Frank Warren Gone Crazy?
There is no question that Frank Warren is Britain's leading promoter, a position he has held for several years now. One of the things I've always liked about Warren, even if it's frustrated me at times, is that he won't let media pressure force him to rush his fighters. After all, how many times did he pack Ricky Hatton's army of fans into the MEN Arena in Manchester against an experienced veteran when it seemed the whole boxing world was calling for a step up in class for 'The Hitman'.
To say the latest contest announced by Frank Warren shocked me is an understatement. 19-1 (15 KO's) Amir Khan will take on Mexican boxing legend and former world champion, Marco Antonio Barrera, a man boasting a proud 64-6 (43 KO's) record and the famous conqueror of British star Prince Naseem Hamed.
After Khan was knocked out inside a minute against Breidis Prescott, I expected Warren to bring his hot prospect back against a slew of decent, light punching opponents to restore Khan's confidence and set him up for a title tilt somewhere down the line. The opposite has happened and although I'd never knock Warren's judgment as he is one of the shrewdest men in the fight game, I am wondering if he's lost his marbles!
This fight could either light the touch paper on Khan's career or see his career ended in a single night. A second knockout defeat in three fights really would leave Khan very hard to market - the Prescott defeat can be referred to as a 'blip' or being 'caught cold' but the knowledgeable boxing public won't accept that excuse twice.
The question is, how much has Barrera got left? Undoubtedly, the Mexican is past his best at aged 35. In addition, he has only fought three times in the past two years, losing two of those contests (both by decision over 12 rounds). But, look who the two losses were against - Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. No disgrace in losing to those guys as they actually figure in most people's top 10 pound for pound lists. Another factor is size; Barrera is simply not a fully blown lightweight whereas Khan is a genuine, tall, rangy lightweight.
So, has Frank Warren made a mistake in choosing Barrera for Khan? Maybe so, only time will tell. But if Khan wins this contest in style then Warren will be proved the master of well timed matches again, just as he was when he finally let Ricky Hatton off the leash to take on the inactive Kostya Tszyu. The bout is set for 14th March 2009 at Manchester's MEN Arena and I can't wait. I really am unsure what's going to happen in this bout but one thing is for sure - I absolutely cannot wait to watch it.
Play the Detective Game For Horse Racing Handicapping Success
Are you getting bored or frustrated by your efforts at the horse track? Is horseracing getting boring and old hat? Maybe your horse racing handicapping could use a boost and you need more information about picking winners.
Here is a little exercise that might open your eyes to some possibilities to pick more winners and have a little fun playing a game. We call it the Horseracing Detective. Your job, as the horse racing detective, is to observe the horses, jockeys, and trainers, and to find clues to which one is likely to win, without using the past performances. The only thing you can do is to check the equipment the horse used in its last races, for instance, tongue ties, wraps, Cornell Collars, etc.
Instead of burying your nose in the program, past performances, speed sheets, etc. Spend some time at rail side or the paddock and watch the horses. Watch them being saddled, watch them in the post parade, and make notes. What kind of notes? Well first of all, make notes about the horses equipment, for instance, is it wearing front wraps today and did it last time it ran? Is it wearing a tongue tie? That is a very big equipment change.
Watch the jockey and trainer as well and from their body language, or if you can read lips, find out what is going on with them. Did the trainer just tell her jockey to just go easy on him today because he isn't 100%? Maybe she said don't push him until the 1/8th pole. Did you catch that? Does that jockey look confident, or is he or she just slouching and apparently bored by the proceedings?
Is someone who thinks he or she is on the next winner likely to be yawning and distracted in the post parade? Is the horse on its toes or just plodding along?
There are so many things going on right under your nose that I could write a book about them, but that would take too much time and, like you, I like to spend my days going over a program and watching races.
After you've made your notes, and after each race, write down the results and see if any of your notes pointed out a winner. You may be surprised to find that there was a winner right under your nose, and everyone else's and the clues were staring everyone in the face. You may also find some favorites who were beaten and gave clues that they would run poorly while in the paddock or post parade. The point I am making is that a horse race is a live event and takes place in the present.
Past performances can only show you so much and the rest of the information is right in front of you, but the only way you'll see it and get the message is to be a horse racing detective at the race track.
